Job Announcement


The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department seeks a dedicated and detail-oriented Pharmacist who will work under the supervision of a senior pharmacist to manage and oversee all aspects of our pharmaceutical operations. This position performs professional work in preparing, preserving, compounding, and dispensing drugs and medications and participates in the functions of an emergency services pharmacy unit. Will also have additional responsibilities such as procurement, budget, and inventory control. Ensures adherence to policies and procedures that meet federal, state, and local guidelines and ensures safe controlled medication storage, distribution, access, and use wherever they are utilized. This includes appropriately storing, distributing, and handling controlled medications and other equipment/supplies. Will also assist in maintaining appropriate levels of pharmaceutical supplies. Performs supply and resupply of automated dispensing machines at remote satellite sites throughout the system. This vital role ensures the safe and effective distribution of medications to support our first responders in their life-saving work.

  • Compounds and dispenses prescriptions in a clinic ambulatory care pharmacy;
  • Coordinates with clinical personnel and physicians in other departments;
  • Provides counsel to clients regarding use of medication;
  • Consults with medical staff regarding appropriate and available medication;
  • Reviews prescriptions for interactions and dosage error;
  • Assists in maintaining appropriate levels of pharmaceutical supplies;
  • Performs all pharmacy operations in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations;
  • Provides guidance and assistance to personnel assigned to provide support to pharmacy operations;
  • Provides intravenous medications to different clinics;
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date records;
  • Prepares for inspections;
  • Conducts research concerning specific medications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from an accredited college or University with a Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy; plus, one year of experience performing professional pharmacy work preparing, preserving, compounding, and dispensing drugs and medications.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • DEA License
  • Prior experience working in emergency medicine or directly with EMS agencies.
  • Demonstrated experience in a senior role, with responsibilities including mentoring, staff management, policy development, and strategic planning.
  • Experience managing controlled substances, including regulatory compliance, inventory management, and ensuring proper use within an EMS context.
  • Familiarity with the medications and protocols used in pre-hospital emergency care.
  • Strong clinical knowledge, especially in pharmacotherapy relevant to emergency and critical care settings.
  • Understanding federal, state, and local regulations governing pharmaceutical storage, distribution, and use in emergency settings.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with EMS personnel, medical directors, and other stakeholders.
  • Experience working in interdisciplinary teams, particularly in high-stress environments such as emergency medicine or public safety.
  • Knowledge of pharmacy information systems, particularly those used in EMS settings.
  • Understanding the logistical aspects of managing pharmaceutical supplies in a fire and rescue department, including inventory control and supply chain management.
  • Ability to quickly assess and resolve complex clinical and operational issues.
  • High level of accuracy in managing medication inventories and ensuring compliance with regulations.
  • Ability to work effectively in dynamic and sometimes unpredictable environments.
  • Strong commitment to ethical practices and public safety.
  • Familiarity with the mission and operational needs of a fire and rescue department.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check and tuberculosis test to the satisfaction of the employer.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to carry large/bulky equipment. Good eyesight: proper protective clothing is necessary. Maintain a sufficient fitness level to participate in packaging, distributing, and delivering pharmaceutical medications and supplies. Must be able to drive a county vehicle.
